so.
some weeks ago I acquired a new roleplaying game. (well, I bought Castle Falkenstein second hand for 20 NOK after that, but that's not what I am going to write about now.)
it might be pushing it a bit to actually declare it a roleplaying game per se, though, as the accepted definition of an RPG is randomisation, rules, character sheets, GM, soft drinks and junk food on Sunday night.
this is different.
the game is called De Profundis, and it concerns itself with something as mundane as writing letters. by hand.
but not ordinary letters. these are, to borrow a phrase from the game, letters from the abyss. letters in which we, the authors, invoke psychodrama and explore the frontiers of imagination and perception. like the blurb asks: "where does the madness end and reality begin?"
it is decidedly Lovecraftian in style, borrowing heavily from Stoker, Machen, and Dunsany in addition. a certain degree of familiarity with this kind of literature is recommended, but not necessary in order to play the game. the authors mentioned merely provide splendid examples of the kind of horror this game is designed to conjure.
I would like to run this with a circle of friends. but it comes with a warning, one I take seriously. it says the "game is intended for mentally stable adults". which I interpret to mean that the borderlines of make-believe and the real world are going to be pushed in this game, and that it is quite possible to overload one's system, possibly resulting in hazardous and catastrophic confusions.
in plain text: don't play this game if you're not mature enough. and I'm deadly serious about this. (normally I would have smirked, had I myself read such a warning, but think of it as a light, self-inspired kind of hypnosis. being put under a trance can be dangerous to some people, too.)
that said, you are all invited to join. I really want to play this game, and I figure LJ is a good way to advertise for correspondents. I promise it will be interesting.
and if you by chance read this post a long time after I've posted it, you are still welcome to contact me about it anytime, by commenting this entry, by phone/SMS, or by emailing me. this is in principle a standing, open offer.
English and Norwegian are both fine.
stay in touch.
